Women Crush Wednesday : Style Crush : Gloria Steinem
My first suggested style post! How exciting! A few weeks ago, a good friend of mine asked if I would segment the ever so iconic, Gloria Steinem. Challenge accepted. With glee! Steinem has moved mountains when it comes to the women’s liberation movement. Through journalism and activism, she’s fought tirelessly in the quest for gender equality. Her words are always powerful and poignant.
Her list of accolades are astounding but here are three things worth knowing about this powerhouse of a lady:
1. Her undercover work at Hugh Heffner’s Playboy Club in New York helped her to highlight the poor working conditions in I was a Playboy Bunny. Her investigation was later turned into the movie A Bunny’s Tale. 2. She co-founded Ms. magazine back in 1972; a magazine run solely by women as a way to shed light on the tough challenges women face. In it’s 42nd year, it continues to pride itself on birthing a magazine from a movement. 3. In March, she welcomed her 80th birthday! You can still find Steinem writing, and filling a calender with speeches and appearances (mostly in New York).
Her journey embodies perserverance and strength. She’s amazing!
NOW, onto her style. I love a good all black outfit. It’s always slimming, but more importantly, always stunning. As seen above, Gloria loves black. She loves cuffs. She loves hardware. She loves a smokey eye and a nude lip. Instead of replicating a classic Gloria look, I decided to keep key elements of her style but modernize it into something that I would have in my closet.
I asked my dear friend how do we become friends with this lady? HOW? HOW? She writes back “I feel like we’re already friends with her just by being strong women.” LOVE!
I’ll leave you with one of my favorite quotes from Steinem…
I hope you enjoyed this weeks WCW.
